The course consists of three modules: lecture, laboratory and field training.

The aim of the course is to equip students with the knowledge of general and systematic botany with particular emphasis on pharmacopoeial species. On the basis of Resolution of the Senate of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University No XXII-39.6/12 of 25 April 2012, i.e. from the teaching cycle 2012/2013:

KNOWLEDGE

W1. Understands the basic processes occurring in living organisms at the molecular, cellular and whole organism level K_W01.

W2. Understands the importance of biodiversity conservation as a source of biological material for practical applications and as a condition for ensuring balance in the biosphere. K_W08:

W3. Describes processes occurring in living organisms on the basis of experiments and observations and based on data from scientific sources. K_W11:

W4. Knows basic research tools and techniques, laboratory and field, used in biological sciences. K_W17

SKILLS:

Course Description: The medicinal properties of plants and their role in both traditional and modern medicine; history of herbal medicine, and alternative medicinal practices around the world. A survey of plants affecting human health and how they are used historically and in modern times, with emphasis on the biologically active constituents.

1. Types and roles of plant tissues; microscopic analysis of plant tissues and organs

2. Overview of plant parts/products used in herbal medicine.

3. Morphological and anatomical characteristics of vegetative and generative plant organs;

4. Functions of plant organs

5. Identification OF non-tissue raw materials: oils, essential oils, honeys

6. Systematic review of species used in medical preparations (algae, fungi, bryophytes, vascular plants)

7. Cultivation, harvesting, processing, storage, marketing and utilization of medicinal plants

8. Identification of selected species' families with emphasis on medicinal plant species (study of Families (Dicot): Ranunculaceae, Fabaceae, Solanaceae, Lamiaceae, Apiacaea, Rosaceae, Asteraceae, Poaceae, Liliaceae )
