Pełny opis: (tylko po angielsku)

The medicinal properties of plants and their role in both traditional and modern medicine. History of herbal medicine, and alternative medicinal practices around the world. The basics of ethnobotanical research. Biodiversity, endangered medicinal and aromatic plants. Botanical, ecological, chemical and pharmacological characteristics of common medicinal plants. Biological aspects of natural active compounds present in plants. Commercial use of herbs. Therapeutic uses of plants (nerve system, metabolic syndrome, urology, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular). Herbal medicinal for dermatologic uses. The psychoactive drugs and poisons obtained from plants stimulants, hallucinogens, depressants). Toxicity of medicinal plants (hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, neurotoxicity). Future of medicinal plants in medicine.

The course consists of three modules: lecture, laboratory and field training.

The aim of the course is to equip students with the knowledge of general and systematic botany with particular emphasis on pharmacopoeial and cosmetic species, morphological and anatomical structure of plant organs and pharmacopoeial raw materials, selected biologically active compounds present in plants, their action and use. Developing in students the ability to recognize medicinal and poisonous plants on the basis of fresh and herbarium specimens. Developing skills of using "keys" to mark plant raw materials. The classes have a theoretical and practical aspect.
