Knowledge:

W1. The graduate knows and understands basics and advanced issues related to normal and cell biology at cellular, subcellular and molecular levels (K_W01-03).

W2. The graduate knows and understands the theoretical basis of methods used in studying cancer biology and potential anti-cancer therapeutics (K_W03-04).

W3. The graduate knows and understands the modern trends in analyzing cancer biology at molecular level (K_W04-05).

W4. The graduate knows and understands the impact of the malignant neoplasms on modern civilization and need to seek new solutions for their treatment (K_W06-07).

Skills:

U1. The graduate is able to perform procedures in aseptic conditions and handle human cell cultures (K_U02, K_U05).

U2. The graduate is able to perform analytical methods on cell cultures at cellular and molecular level (K_U04, K_U05).

U3. The graduate is able to analyze and interpret results obtained from scientific methods carried on normal and cancer cell cultures (K_U05).

Social competence:

K1. The graduate is ready to design experiments for studying cancer biology using in vitro cell cultures (K_K01).

K2. The graduate is ready to verify their knowledge, solve biological problems related to the tumor biology and share the knowledge (K_K03, K_K04).

Periodic written knowledge testing.

Zakres tematów: (tylko po angielsku)

1. Health and safety regulations. Schedule, examination terms, grading.

Theoretical basics of normal and cancer cell biology.

Organization and equipment of cell culture laboratory.

Types of cancer cells used in studies in vitro.

Cell culture conditions and requirements; culture media.

2. Animal and human cell culture handling. Subculturing and cryopreservation of adherent and non-adherent normal and cancer cell lines.

Normal and cancer primary cell lines: derivation methods for adherent and non-adherent cells.

3. 3D cell cultures. Spheroids as model of tumor.

4. Test 1 – classes 1-3.

5. Methods used in studying cancer biology at cellular level – viability, proliferation and migration evaluation assays.

6. Methods used in studying cancer biology at molecular level – protein and genetic assays.

Methods for staining normal and cancer cells.

Assays for apoptosis process evaluation.

7. Flow cytometry in cancer biology.

8. Test 2 – classes 5-7.
